Air abrasion is a very new, very advanced dental technology.
So new that only a few dental practices in the country have it. Air abrasion replaces the
dental drill by using a concentrated stream of air and a super fine powder to remove decay
without drilling.
Because there's no drill there's often no need for anaesthetic,
which means no needles. Another benefit of air abrasion is that more of the tooth
structure can be preserved than ever before. Thanks to the accuracy of the air stream,
only the decay is gently removed, and not the healthy part of the tooth. This quality
makes air abrasion important in the relatively new field of microdentistry. This is the
philosophy and practice of:
1. finding and treating decay as
early as possible;
2. removing as little tooth
structure as possible;
3. making the smallest possible
restorations;
4. and assuring that those
restorations are aesthetically pleasing and long lasting.
Most people who indicate an anxiety towards dental treatment cite the noise of the drill
and the thought of an injection as the two main causes. This makes air abrasion of
paramount importance to those attempting to overcome their anxieties. It is also very
beneficial in the preparation of childrens teeth for exactly the same reasons.
In short, air abrasion has become an essential tool enabling us to achieve easier, higher
quality routine dental care, which is more comfortable, predictable and readily received
by our patients.
